Barren County leaders are setting aside a full week to honor local Special Olympics basketball champions.
At the March 17 fiscal court meeting, Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd signed a proclamation celebrating the Barren County Flames and their recent success on the court.
The Flames Special Olympics basketball teams demonstrated outstanding dedication, perseverance and teamwork throughout their season, according to the proclamation. Team A and Team B both won state championships in Louisville on Sunday, a milestone that prompted the county-wide recognition, including a police escort into town and welcome at Beaver Creek Park.
Byrd noted that the Flames’ accomplishment reflects not only the talent and determination of the athletes, but also the strong support from coaches, families and the broader community, adding that the Flames serve as an inspiration to residents by exemplifying courage, unity and the true spirit of competition. The proclamation designates March 15 through 21 as Barren County Flames Week in Barren County.
“I am so proud of you all,” Byrd said. “People don’t understand how much time [the flames] put in to this, and how, honestly, it looks on our community that the Barren County Flames — not just the Flames — won. We’re so proud.”
County magistrates also approved a $199,000 and a $691,500 invoice from Bluegrass and Associates for work on Oil Well and Ritters Mill roads. Barren County Deputy Judge-Executive Garland Gilliam confirmed to Glasgow News 1 that both road repairs were funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The next fiscal court meeting will be on April 1 at 9 a.m., according to Byrd.
