While the principal selection process has not begun, Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp hopes to fill a soon-to-be-vacant position “not long after spring break.”

The vacancy was created when South Green Elementary School Principal Josh Turner announced his decision to step down at the end of this academic year to spend more time with his family. Muhlenkamp, who was informed of Turner’s decision over Christmas Break, told Glasgow News 1 that he plans to meet with the school’s Site Based Decision-Making Council on March 17 to formally begin the principal selection process.

Allysa Gooden, Kylie Foushee, Dee Shannon, Dustin Pate, Elizabeth Myatt, Victoria Capps and Justin Bertram — who are members of the decision-making council — will help Muhlenkamp set the timeline and establish a few survey questions that will be sent out to community members to gauge the “soft skills” they’d like to see in a new principal.

The new principal will be selected by Muhlenkamp in consultation with council members, who will be invited to “vet” the applicants and attend interviews.

“You want a strong leader, who has a strong understanding of instruction and practice; they don’t have to be a master of all content, but they need to understand what good teaching and good instruction looks like,” Muhlenkamp said. “You [also] want a person that can be personable because, ultimately my goal is to have every student, staff and family member to feel safe when they come into the building. If [students] have that atmosphere and that environment then the learning can come naturally.”

“I want someone who has the ability to continue the environment that families, students and staff all feel [that the school] is somewhere they want to be,” he added.

The position is posted on the district’s job website.

“We’re in the infancy of this process,” Muhlenkamp said. “I’m excited to see what our applicant pool looks like and what qualities those individuals might bring…South Green is an excellent school [with] a lot of great staff [and that’s] been strong academically, so we want to continue those same expectations and traditions with whoever the new leader is.”
