Caverna High School graduate and longtime coach Trevent Hayes has earned one of the region’s highest athletics honors.

Hayes was inducted into the 5th Region Athletic Director Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in recognition of his career as a student-athlete, coach and community leader, according to a Caverna press release.

Hayes, a member of Caverna’s Class of 1993, built a reputation as one of the school’s most versatile athletes, competing in football, basketball, baseball, track and field, tennis and cross country.

In basketball, he helped lead the Colonels to Class A regional championships in 1990, 1991 and 1993, along with district titles in 1990 and 1991, and earned all-tournament honors during the 1993 postseason. In track, Hayes captured regional championships in the 100-meter dash, triple jump and 300-meter intermediate hurdles. He twice finished among the top eight at the state meet in both the 100-meter dash and triple jump. He was also a two-year baseball letterman and earned additional varsity letters in tennis and cross country.

Hayes’ biggest numbers came on the football field, where he became one of the most dynamic players in Caverna history, according to the release. He was named Pioneer Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year three times, earned conference MVP honors twice and received two All-State honorable mention selections.

In 1992, he led the state in receiving and still holds several Caverna records, including single-game touchdowns, most receiving yards in a career and most receiving yards in a single game.

After graduation, Hayes attended the Mid-America College of Mortuary Science and later became owner of Hayes Brothers Funeral Home in Glasgow.

His leadership has also extended into civic and professional organizations, serving as president of the Cave Area NAACP, vice president of the Kentucky Association of Morticians and as a member of the 2013 Who’s Who in Mortuary Service.

Even with those commitments, Hayes has remained closely tied to Caverna youth. He has coached basketball and middle school football and eventually returned as head coach of the Caverna High School football team. In 2022, he led the Colonels to the Class A District 1 championship, the program’s first district title in three decades.

He is also known for organizing an annual Thanksgiving Day community meal for residents in need.
