Barren County struggled in the second quarter Monday night and fell in the semifinals of the Boys Fourth Region Tournament, 73-38, to Warren Central.
The Dragons opened the game on a 9-0, but the Trojans responded to that early run. After a time out, Jaxson Byrd scored inside for Barren. Warren Central added a basket to maintain a 9-point lead. Then the Trojans put together a 5-0 run with a jumper by Weston Shelton and a 3-pointer by Shelton.
That was a close as the Trojans got in the game.
The Dragons hit back-to-back 3s, which forced another time out from Trojans’ coach Warren Cunningham, and led 17-7.
Shelton scored again for Barren out of that break, but Central led 22-12 at the end of the first period.
The game swung completely to the Dragons in the second period. They posted a 23-4 run in the quarter and led 45-16 by halftime.
Barren did not outscore Central in the second half, but did not have a lopsided disadvantage. The Dragons posted a 16-12 edge in the third period, and 12-10 advantage in the fourth.
Shelton led the Trojans in scoring with 13 points.
Barren finished its season at 19-13 overall. The loss ends the careers for five seniors — Kade Hardy, Byrd, Cameron Pippin, Gavin Nunn and Ben Blackburn.
