North Jackson Elementary leads Barren County in strong Governor’s Cup performances

North Jackson Elementary School has been named the overall Region 8 Governor’s Cup champion, capping a strong showing by Barren County Schools academic teams across several regional competitions.

Elementary academic teams from local schools competed in the Region 8 Governor’s Cup for fourth and fifth graders, with events culminating Feb. 28 at host site Hiseville Elementary, according to Barren County Schools,

North Jackson Elementary captured the overall Region 8 title and also took first place in Quick Recall. In Barren County’s Quick Recall team results, Park City Elementary finished seventh and Austin Tracy Elementary placed eighth.

Barren County students also earned multiple individual awards in the Region 8 competition. In mathematics, Grayson Barrett of North Jackson placed second, Emily Jiang of North Jackson finished third, and Malcolm Wessling of North Jackson took fifth.

In science, Barrett won and Davis Cook of North Jackson placed fourth. Cook also earned first place in social studies, while Osbaldo Campos of Park City Elementary finished fifth in that subject. In language arts, Wessling took first place and Brooklyn Studd of Hiseville Elementary finished fourth. In arts and humanities, North Jackson’s Cecilia Christie placed second, Jiang took third, and Charlotte Edwards finished fifth. In composition, Wessling earned first place, Studd took second, and Cook placed fourth. North Jackson also finished fourth in Future Problem Solving. Overall among Barren County elementary schools, North Jackson placed first, Hiseville Elementary finished fifth and Park City Elementary ninth. Hiseville Elementary served as the regional host site. According to organizers, Dinah Wallace of Barren County Schools coordinated the event as contest manager, working with all schools to facilitate the competition.

Ellen Blevins served as chief official, and John Alexander was the head scorekeeper.

Barren County’s success extended beyond the elementary level. Barren County Middle School competed in the Region 5 Governor’s Cup, tying for fifth place in Quick Recall, earning fifth in Future Problem Solving and placing fourth overall.

Individually, Korbyn Basham placed second in mathematics, Stephen Miller took second in science, Lilly Martin finished fifth in language arts and Presley Johnson placed third in composition. At the high school level, Barren County took part in the Region 4 Governor’s Cup, tying for fifth place overall and finishing third in Future Problem Solving. Brady Cook earned third place in social studies.
