Glasgow used a suffocating defense in the first quarter to take control of its game against Warren East in the first round of the Boys 15th District Tournament. That quarter lifted the Scotties to an 85-50 win Tuesday night.

With the game tied 4-4 with two minutes gone in the first period, Jerrick Martin stole a Raiders pass and fed Jackson Norris for a layup. That basket was the first part of a 25-2 run the rest of the opening quarter.

“The message was they’ve got nothing to loose at this point, and I didn’t want us to come out and be sluggish or give them any kind of confidence,” coach Brandon Stockton said of the aggressive start by the Scotties. “Defense, again, was the key. We are going to hang our hat on it for the rest of the year.”

Six different players posted points during Glasgow’s first-quarter run.

The game settled down after that initial burst, but the Scotties did outscore the Raiders in every quarter.

Glasgow led 50-23 by halftime, and 69-38 headed into the final frame.

Landon Minton led the Scotties with 17 points, while Jackson Norris and Trevis Collor each scored 11, and Martin finished with 10.

The win punched their ticket to the title game Friday at 6 p.m. against either Barren County or Allen County-Scottsville. Those teams play Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Glasgow High School.

“They’re both very good teams. Either team is going to be a tough game for us,” Stockton said. “But for us, we’re not going to do anything different. It’s all about us and what we can do well.”

Glasgow won both games against Barren this season (64-56 and 54-44), and split with Allen (74-55 and 75-90). The Scotties improved to 17-12 overall with the win Tuesday.
