Caverna survived and advanced at the Boys’ All “A” Classic State Tournament on Friday. The Colonels never trailed, but did have to hold on to beat Clinton County, 48-46, at Owensboro Sportscenter in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Caverna led by six points headed into the fourth quarter. A 7-2 Bulldogs’ run midway through the quarter got them to within a point, 41-40, with four minutes left. From there, the Colonels struggled at the foul line — they missed four freebies.

That allowed Clinton County to tie the game at 46-all with 28 seconds to play. Jaylin Craine then broke the missed free throw streak by hitting two with about 12 seconds to go. He finished the game with 23 points, including 7 of 10 at the foul line.

Prior to Craine’s made free throws, Cortavian Maxey drilled a 3-pointer that gave the Colonels a four-point lead, which helped Caverna survive Clinton County’s comeback.

The Bulldogs attempted a 3-pointer with the clock running out, but the ball bounced off the rim.

The Colonels face Walton Verona at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at Owensboro Sportscenter in the semifinal round.

Caverna led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, and 26-18 at halftime.
