Dangerous ice accumulation is expected for Barren County, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.
As part of the weather service’s Saturday evening update that focused on freezing rain rather than snow totals, it stated that Barren County was in the “dangerous ice amounts” zone. Between a 0.5 and a 0.75 inch of ice is expected tonight and into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
“Prolonged significant impacts expected, including very dangerous road conditions, tree damage, downed power lines, and multi-day power outages,” the weather service stated. “Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.”
This ice accumulation is higher than the initial 0.25 inch predicted by the weather service on Jan. 23.
Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam previously told Glasgow News 1 that an inch of ice was an additional 500 pounds of weight on a utility line.
“You get much over a quarter-inch of ice and we start having major outages,” Gilliam said previously.
On Jan. 24, Gilliam reemphasized people should limit travel to necessity, saying that as it turns to ice overnight the roads will become slick. Ice can inhibit crews from clearing the road, especially during the night, Gilliam said.
“You can push snow, but you can’t push ice,” Gilliam said.
