The bill that would return licensing renewals to county officials is one step closer to reality.
Kentucky Senate Bill 7 attempts to have “the Transportation Cabinet expand the availability of driver licensing services by establishing a system in which a local official in the county may issue renewal and duplicate operator’s licenses and personal identification cards through a mutual agreement,” the bill stated.
The bill had a third reading in the Senate on Jan. 16 and passed by a 34-1 vote. Barren County Senator and President Pro Tempore David Givens, who is listed as one of the bill’s cosponsors, voted in favor, according to the Legislative Research Commission.
Senate Bill 7 heads to the Kentucky House of Representatives for its consideration.
Barren County Circuit Court Clerk Julie Wright Jolly previously told Glasgow News 1 that while she would be happy to have licensing brought back to her office. She said there would be logistics that would need to be worked out. Senate Bill 7 stated that those counties that issue renewals will have the necessary equipment purchased by the Transportation Cabinet.
The bill stated the county officials will not issue initial licenses or IDs.
Kentucky House Bill 162, which seeks to accomplish a similar goal, remains in the House’s Transportation Committee. Representative Savannah Maddox is one of the sponsors of the House bill.
