Kentucky now has two bills working their way through the General Assembly that seek to return licensing to the counties.

Senator Aaron Reed, along with numerous cosponsor — which includes Barren County Senator and President Pro Tempore David Givens, introduced Kentucky Senate Bill 7. Much like House Bill 162, this bill endeavors to return licensing to county circuit clerks rather than the current regional office approach.

Barren County Circuit Court Clerk Julie Wright Jolly said it would be “wonderful” to have licensing capabilities returned to her office. She spoke with Glasgow News 1 on Jan. 8.

Driver Licensing Regional Offices took licensing capabilities away from the counties after the passage of 2020 legislation. Since it was completed in 2022, people have to travel to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet region offices for licensing needs. The nearest regional offices to Barren County are in Elizabethtown, Bowling Green and Columbia.

Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said there is still the possibility of a regional office locating in Barren County at the old health department building on West Washington Street in Glasgow. She told Glasgow News 1 that she would know definitively by April 15.

On Jan. 13 the Kentucky Senate bill was given to the transportation committee, according to the Legislative Research Commission.
