Jay Turner, The Voice of the Trojans, was among those inducted into the 2026 Barren County High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Fifty-year broadcasting veteran Turner, whose love of sports took off during his Gamaliel High School basketball career, began doing the play-by-plays in 1985 when a former radio coworker invited him to a game in Edmonson County.
“It was in 1985: Stan McKinney, who worked at the radio station back then, was doing a ballgame…, one afternoon I was on the air and he walks in the studio and asks, ‘Jay do you want to go with me to a ball game?’” Turner said. “So I sat there next to him and he was doing play-by-play and right after half time he asked me: ‘Jay do you want to do the third quarter?’ Later in the summer [McKinney] left and I was asked to take over basketball for Barren County.”
He did Barren for a few years before switching to Metcalfe County beginning with the 1989-90 season.
After broadcasting Metcalfe County games for several years, Turner began commentating on Barren County basketball games in 1995. Little could he have known at the time that this was the beginning of his 30-year journey with Barren County sports that would culminate in his induction.
“It’s quite an honor,” Turner said. “I’m humbled by this.”
Turner recently had the Barren County press box named in his honor and won the Kentucky Broadcasting Association’s 2025 sports announcer. He is the first inductee that was not a Barren County athlete or coach, Turner said.
Turner was inducted as a contributor.
Other 2026 inductees include Kenneth Corbin, Jerry Eubank and the 1990s high school cross country team. The inductees were chosen due to their dedication, excellence, and impact on the school and the wider Glasgow and Barren County community, according to the school district.
