Scams and frauds have resulted in people losing thousands of dollars.

Glasgow police have received several complaints recently involving scams and frauds, according to a Glasgow Police Department press release.

“Fraud frequently starts with a pop-up message — often with a logo from companies like Microsoft or Apple — saying your computer has a virus,” the release stated. “You click a link or call a supposed support number, and they request remote access to your computer. The criminals can now access all of the information on your machine and also install malware.”

Some frauds involve an unknown person posing as an investment manager that urges people to invest in cryptocurrency. They will then guide people to a cleverly fake website that will not let them withdraw their earnings — either because it isn’t possible or a withdrawal will be guarded by high fees, Glasgow police stated. The attempt will expose your personal information to the scammer.

Scams can also appear as IRS-approved individual retirement accounts, or require a person to load money on gift cards that they then provide the codes for to the scammers, according to Glasgow police.

“Do not provide any personal information and report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agency,” the release stated.
