Principal Josh Turner presented to members of Glasgow Independent’s school board about South Green Elementary during a recent board meeting at Glasgow High School.
He discussed accountability data that was released by the Kentucky Department of Education. According to his report to the board, South Green received an overall Green rating; its index score has increased each of the last five years; the school has the 2nd highest proficiency rating in reading and math out of 11 local schools; and it has scored above state average in all subjects.
“What I was most impressed with is just our progress in the three categories of science, social studies and writing. For the first time ever, we scored ‘blue’ and ‘very high,’” Turner said, attributing a lot of the growth to teacher development and collaboration.
“Our teams are working better together,” he said. “No matter what room a student goes to, they’re on the same page.”
As far as future plans, Turner spoke about collaborating with Highland Elementary in the creation of a new writing plan.
“I do think that will pay off over time with just being intentional and the consistency across the school,” he said. “We also have math teams that we have created and I think that will go well in terms of having common language and common expectations across the school.”
When discussing a school climate and safety student survey, the principal said he was very proud that 99 percent of students said adults at their school “work hard to keep students safe.”
From the same survey, 97 percent of students responded that they totally agree with the following statement: “Adults from my school care about me.”
Board member William Thornbury said the school has done a great job creating a safe and welcoming environment.
“What you’re doing is working and it’s working well,” Thornbury said. “I think you’re doing very well.
“What I’m seeing is exceptional work.”
