With less than three second to play, Weston Shelton buried a deep 3 to give Barren County a 56-55 win over Allen County-Scottsville on Thursday.
That basket capped a comeback by the Trojans in a game that had been delayed by more than an hour due to a power outage throughout the county.
Coach Warren Cunningham called a time out with his team down two, 55-53, with 16 seconds to play. Out of the break, the Trojans worked the ball around the perimeter before Kade Hardy passed to Gavin Nunn in the post, who then kicked the ball out to Shelton for the go-ahead 3-pointer.
On the inbounds, the Patriots lost the ball out of bounds. Barren was able to take over and run out the clock for a 56-55 win.
Allen County-Scottsville led 42-41 headed into the final period. Barren tied the game at 49-49 with just over two minutes left in the game, but turned the ball over with a change to take the lead.
After the Patriots made one of two free throws, Cameron Pippen hit a layup to give the Trojans a 51-50 lead with 1:43 to go.
Allen answered with a layup out of a time out and led 52-51. Barren responded again, this time with a shot by Nunn in the lane. The Trojans led 53-52 with 1:12 to go.
Once again, the Patriots answered with a minute to play and led 54-53. They added a free throw to set up the two-point lead before Shelton’s game-winning 3-pointer.
Pippen led Barren with 11 points, while Nunn added 10.
The Trojans are off until after Christmas. They will play in a tournament at Logan County beginning Friday at 2 p.m. against Springfield, Tenn.
