The Glasgow Parks and Recreation Department recently brought back several accolades from the annual Recreation and Parks Society awards ceremony.

Director Eddie Furlong said the 12-person parks and recreation department won the outstanding facility award and the Outstanding Maintenance Team Award.

“We received the Best Facility Award for Beaver Creek Park and Ochell Tuck Softball Complex [and] we received the best maintenance department, which is a new award that [the society] started this year,” Furlong said. “It feels great.”

Both of these awards were won in Class 3, which, as Furlong explained, denotes the number of people working in the department. Furlong said it’s impressive to win the awards especially considering they were competing against some bigger departments.

“Class 3 is 11 to 20 [employees], so we just barely fit into that class 3…typically we fall into the same class as Bowling Green, Warren County and some of the bigger communities,” Furlong said. “Our biggest competitor in most of these awards is Bowling Green, Warren County [and] Frankfort…. We generally go up against bigger cities so anytime we win is good.”

In addition, Glasgow Mayor Henry Royse won the Public Official Award for his “continued [support of] park improvements, community investment, and the long-term enhancement of recreational opportunities throughout [the city],” a Glasgow press release stated. Furlong said they only give out one of these awards per year.
