Barren Countians encouraged to get REAL ID before holiday travel

As Glasgow and Barren County residents plan to travel for the holidays, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet encouraged people to get their REAL IDs to ensure smoother traveling experiences.

REAL IDs — or REAL ID-compliant credentials — are required to board domestic flights or visit federal facilities, like military bases, since the enforcement day of May 7. Roughly 45 percent of Kentuckians have a REAL ID, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

In addition to encouraging people to get the REAL ID, the cabinet also stated its wait times have been drastically reduced, going from 49 minutes to 14 minutes for walk-in customers and from 25 to 11 minutes for appointment customers, the cabinet stated.

Barren County does not have a regional licensing office, which is where a person needs to visit to renew or get state credentials. The cabinet removed drivers licensing services out of county circuit court clerk’s offices between 2020 and 2022. However, a permanent licensing office may come to Barren County and be located in the old health department building on West Washington Street.

Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said she would get confirmation one way or another in 2026.

The next Barren County pop-up licensing event is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2026.
