Mammoth Cave National Park estimates that the Green River Ferry will reopen next month.
The ferry, which is used to get vehicles and people across the Green River, has been closed since the April flooding that ransacked parts of the commonwealth. The navigational cables and tower were damaged in April and were “being assessed” to see if they could be repaired or needed to be reconstructed, Glasgow News 1 reported at the time.
With two upriver concrete pads poured, a damaged anchor replaced and 1,000 feet of cable on each side installed, the national park personnel estimate that the project should be completed by January 2026. Several stages of work, like a winch system upgrade, tower installation and painting, and additional infrastructure work, is planned to be completed in December, according to the park’s online project status.
“Thank you for your patience as we work to bring the ferry back online,” the national park wrote on social media.
When in operation, the ferry cuts travel time from the south side of the national park to the north side.
