Barren transportation committee recommends bid for Oil Well Road

Barren County transportation committee members recommended accepting a $204,000 bid for repair work on Oil Well Road.

A day before the full fiscal court is set to meet, magistrate and committee chair Tim Coomer opened two bids that would fix the approaches on the Oil Well Road bridge that crosses Skaggs Creek in southern Barren County. The bid submitted by Booth Construction was for $139,500 and the other, submitted by Bluegrass and Associates, was for $204,000.

Due to some uncertainty with the Booth bid, the committee members opted to recommend the higher bid.

Deputy Judge-Executive Garland Gilliam said that while the bridge itself is okay, the county has had to replace the blacktop approaches three times in the last five years. Instead of fixing the approaches with blacktop, Gilliam said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved mitigation funds to add roughly 7,400 square feet of concrete that is 8 inches deep.

If it is approved at the full Barren County Fiscal Court meeting on Nov. 18, there is no start date set on the submitted bid, Gilliam said.

“If Bluegrass and Associates gets it, they’re already working on Old Davidson Road, so we don’t want to pull them off that project to work on another,” Gilliam said.

He hoped the bid winner would begin before the end of the year. When the work begins, Gilliam said the bridge would be closed for approximately 10-14 days. Currently the crossing is passable, Gilliam said.
