Internships for the summer 2026 are available for Barren County college students seeking a career in either the agriculture or government fields.

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell announce the opening of the application period for both the department’s internship program and their Agriculture Legal Fellowship.

“The Kentucky Department of Agriculture offers students the unique opportunity to work side by side with our amazing staff of employees,” Shell said in a department press release. “Through our internship and legal fellowship programs students will gain valuable insight to launch careers in agriculture or an ag-related field. If you are a student with an interest in an agricultural career, we encourage you to apply.”

The internship program is available for students “majoring in a variety of interest areas including agriculture, education, computer science, marketing, communications, pre-law, and other fields,” a department press release stated. Internships run from June to August and are due by Jan. 1, the release stated.

For the first time, the Department of Agriculture is also offering the Agriculture Legal Fellowship that will be housed under the department’s office of legal services. Second- and third-year law students with an interest in legal services and policy through an agricultural lens are encouraged to apply, the release stated.

“This fellowship will allow students to gain skills and experience relating to routine state government proceedings such as administrative hearings and responding to open records requests, as well as traditional in-house counsel practice, including reviewing, updating, or recommending modification to and answering questions about state and federal laws and regulations,” the release stated. “Additionally, the Office of Legal Services engages in dynamic policy research and formulation relating to a wide variety of issues impacting the agriculture industry. This fellowship will allow students to gain skills and experience relating to policy-style research and advocacy at the state and federal level.”

Much like the internship program, the deadline to apply is Jan. 1. Both applications — for the internship program and legal fellowship — must be submitted digitally, the release stated.
