In his first game at Campbellsville University, Eli Brooks helped the Tigers open the season with a 72-61 win over Reinhardt University.
Brooks assisted Jay Milburn on the first basket of the game — a 3-pointer — and finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. The former Barren County Trojan spent the past two seasons at California University of Pennsylvania.
The Tiger defense held the Eagles scoreless for the first two-and-a-half minutes in the season-opener Monday, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after a Brooks layup.
The bench provided a significant spark; a key defensive rebound from Brooks led to a layup for Marcellus Vail, and minutes later, a steal by Kramer set up Taveon Smith for a striking dunk to increase the advantage.
The Tigers led 37-34 at halftime.
In the second half, Brooks ignited the crowd with back-to-back dunks, pushing the lead to 50-42. The Tigers’ defense stifled the Eagles, and the offense built its largest lead of the night — 17 points — when a Jones layup made the score 66-49 with 4:35 to play.
Campbellsville is back in action Saturday against College of Coastal Georgia at 2 p.m. central time at Lindsey Wilson University in the Brady Button Memorial Classic.
