During a brief fiscal court meeting, the Barren County magistrates gave a first nod to an ordinance that would lower the county’s tax rate to 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value.

The magistrates previously approved a rate of 12.6 cents per $100 of assessed value during their regularly scheduled Sept. 2 fiscal court meeting, which was lowered from the 13 cents rate approved in 2024 for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said the magistrates had all agreed to lower the rate even more.

“We are basically going to drop [the rate] down even further,” Byrd said. “We are blessed this year with having the opportunity to do that. I’ve talked with all the magistrates and we felt that it would be in the best interest of the county to drop it even further. That’s the furthest we can drop it down to… and be able for the county to be able to pay the bills we have.”

The four county magistrates present unanimously voted in favor of lowering the rate. A second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12 at 9:30 a.m.
