The Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission approved on Tuesday an additional $1,500 contribution to the Barren County Fiscal Court for a feasibility and impact study on a potential regional sports complex that would be located on the Cleveland Avenue property in Glasgow near Red Cross Elementary.
In total, the tourism commission approved $3,000 to go toward the study.
The commissioners had approved the initial $1,500 during their meeting last month and MacLean Lessenberry, executive director of the commission, said she was going to check if their contribution would be eligible to receive state funding under a matching funds program.
“So for matching funds, certain projects — dependent on a lot of things — you can either be reimbursed 50 percent or 90 percent,” Lessenberry said on Tuesday. “And this would fall into the 50 (percent) from the state.”
With this new information about matching funds from the state, Chairman Byran Sorrell asked the other commissioners if they wanted to contribute more to the study, and after some discussion, they agreed to approve an additional $1,500 since the commission would essentially receive that money back.
The Barren County Fiscal Court had previously approved a $25,000 contract with Sports Facilities Company to conduct the study and Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd had asked several area entities to help with the cost since the project should benefit the region. The Barren County Economic Authority approved a $5,0000 contribution to the study at its meeting last month.
In other business at Tuesday’s tourism meeting, over $46,700 was collected in August for tourism by the City of Glasgow, according to Tina Wood, director of administrative services for the commission.
Lessenberry said this collection was bigger than the same time last year when the figure for the month was a little over $44,000.
The commission’s next meeting is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 14 at the Glasgow-Barren County tourism office.
