Barren County’s seven magistrates will weigh an ordinance lowering the county’s tax rate a the Sept. 10 special-called fiscal court meeting.
The new ordinance lowers the rate to 12.2 cents per $100 of assessed value. Administration and Budget Chairman and Magistrate Marty Kinslow said they decided to lower the rate because of displeasure expressed in person and online.
Kinslow said taking the lower rate would amount to the county bringing in roughly $130,000 less, but that was “dedicated to operating within the budget.”
The 12.2 cents rate, and its related ordinance, would supersede the previously approved 12.6 cents per $100 of assessed value tax rate that was approved on Sept. 2. Kinslow said the magistrates would conduct a first reading on Sept. 10 and the second reading on Sept. 12. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said she expected both to be quick votes.
Byrd said this was the lowest amount the county could drop its rate and still “pay bills.”
The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. in the fiscal court chambers.
