RECAP: Trojans tie Hart in season opener

A quick goal set the Trojans in a hole at Hart County in their season-opening soccer game Tuesday.

Hart County’s Alexander Reynolds scored the game’s first goal a minute and 23 seconds into it. Barren County had multiple chances to tie the game, and take the lead in the second half, but only managed the equalizer.

The Raiders’ goalie stopped a penalty kick less than three minutes into the second frame. The Trojans’ game-tying goal came on a header by Jax Stephens off a corner kick with 21:05 left in the contest.

Barren had a go-ahead goal denied by an offsides call with less than five minutes to play.

Head coach Bobbie Nyekan said his team needed to play better in the midfield to set up better scoring opportunities. He said possession of the ball was key, and working it forward was better than kicking it down field.

“Midfield facilitates offense, midfield facilitates defense,” Nyekan said. “[We have to make] constant 10, 12, 15 yard passes. A 40-yarder downfield will work out for you every once and a while.”

“We can play better, but I don’t want them to be disappointed. We’ve got to learn from every game and improve,” he said.

The Trojans return to action Saturday with a pair of games. They play Russellville at 10 a.m. at the Glasgow-Barren County Soccer Complex, and Muhlenberg County at 5:30 p.m. at home.
