Roads, roads, and more roads led the Barren County Fiscal Court July 15 meeting.

A majority of the 48-minute meeting was dedicated to Magistrate Tim Coomer’s and the county transportation committee’s recommendations to advertise for, or accept bids related to road work on multiple county roads.

Before delivering his committee report, Coomer estimated the county has about $2 million in road projects either planned or underway and said the state cost sharing is a “tremendous” help.

All seven magistrates approved to seek bids for repairs on Matthews Mill Road, Beechtree Lane, Mt. Pleasant Road, Matthews Mill Bridge, Ritters Mill Road, H. Miller Road and approved work bids for Old Davidson and Rick roads.

They accepted bids from Bluegrass for work on Old Davidson and Rick roads at a cost of $64,900 and $39,775 respectively. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said the money is coming from the 80/20 fund, which entails that the state covers 80 percent of the costs while the local government covers the remaining 20 percent.

Regarding Beechtree Lane and Matthews Mill Road, the court members approved a resolution and memorandum of agreement with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, wherein the county received $425,000 for related work on those two county roads. The Beechtree Lane bid was roughly $384,000 but Byrd said she could get the price down.

Mt. Pleasant Road was rebid because, in Coomer’s words, the original bid to shift the exit on Roseville Road “came back higher than expected.” The design-build bid was approved to be advertised by the court members for H. Miller Road with the statement that work on it would not begin until July 2026.

The next Barren County Fiscal Court meeting is scheduled for Aug. 5.
