Glasgow boutiques and other small-scale independently owned businesses have joined forces to create the Glasgow Small Retail & Boutique Association, an organization created to help bring commerce and alignment.
“We do have a lot of boutiques in Glasgow now and it is beneficial for us to work together and not against each other,” said association’s founder and president, Jess Gilbert, of Boutique Unique.
In the past many of the businesses have worked together to put on the annual chocolate crawl and Christmas open house events, but Gilbert said that someone would always inevitably get left out.
“Several people felt not included and we didn’t have a chance to include them, and I hated that but it is almost impossible to reach out to every boutique in town because there are so many of us. Also many have odd hours or work other jobs, too, so it was hard to reach everyone. We needed to find a way to work together better,” she said.
The group held their first meeting earlier this summer to talk about how to move forward.
They elected six board members, and an advertising committee. Businesses that wish to join will pay annual dues, and apply.
There are some basic perimeters. Members must have brick and mortar locations, be purchasing new inventory for their retail space, be located within the Glasgow city limits and no franchises are allowed.
“If you fit the criteria to be part of the association, you can attend meetings which we plan to hold every other month. We want to be able to showcase the area, and what we have to offer. We are not one serving Glasgow now. We have people that travel here to shop,” Gilbert said.
