Barren County Schools is making significant strides in ensuring that all students, regardless of their primary language, receive the education and support they need to succeed. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program has been integral to new students who may have little to no education with the language.
Christa Middleton, director of special programming with the district, has worn many hats at Barren County, including experience as an English Learner Coordinator, making her uniquely knowledgeable on the program having worked directly with ESL students and teachers.
Led by a dedicated team of ESL teachers and support staff, the program offers comprehensive language instruction tailored to the needs of each student. Middleton went on to explain that the ESL staff meets a student where they are at in their linguistic trek.
The number of non-native English speakers moving to Barren County, KY, has been gradually increasing. According to the American Community Survey, from 2017 to 2021, about 5% of the population in Barren County spoke a language other than English at home. Statewide, there were approximately 101,826 individuals in Kentucky who spoke English “less than very well” during the same period.
This demographic shift has brought a rich tapestry of cultures to the area, but also a set of unique challenges, particularly in the realm of education. One Barren County Administrator pointed out that ESL teachers do not know the stories of their students, some coming from war-torn or impoverished areas. While that information may be irrelevant to the student’s acquisition of the language, it can make going through the academic and teenage experience all the more difficult on the students, which is why students are encouraged to also form bonds with fellow English learners, as Middleton points out.
With around 80 students and three ESL teachers, Middleton explained that Barren County Schools is fortunate to have such strong support for the program and is blessed to have the resources allocated to the department.
As the non-English speaking population in Barren County continues to grow, the ESL program remains committed to adapting and expanding its services. Plans are underway to incorporate more technology-based learning tools and to increase the number of bilingual staff members, as well as more collaboration with other districts. Middleton further explained how she saw the program evolving in the future.
The Barren County Schools ESL program is more than just a language learning initiative; it is a lifeline for students and families navigating the complexities of a new language and culture.
