Park City Makes Its Mark at First Barren County Economic Authority Meeting as Voting Member

Jul 18, 2024 | 6:00 AM
On July 12, Park City participated in its inaugural meeting as a voting member of the Barren County Economic Authority (BCEA), marking a historic milestone for the municipality.
Held at the BCEA offices on East Public Square, the annual meeting covered a wide range of topics crucial to the county’s economic development and provided Park City with its first opportunity to influence regional decisions directly.
David Peterson, Chairperson of the BCEA, opened the meeting with welcoming remarks. The agenda swiftly moved to the annual meeting business, where the election of officers took place. Positions for Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and Secretary-Treasurer were filled, along with assignments to various committees, including Administration, Finance, and Property. These committees play a vital role in the smooth functioning and strategic planning of the BCEA.
Maureen Carpenter delivered the President and CEO report, highlighting key achievements and ongoing initiatives.
The report emphasized the Authority’s focus on membership growth and retention, with a target to recruit 100 new members and maintain a retention rate above 85%.
Notably, since January, 61 new members have joined, although 36 members have dropped due to various reasons, including business closures and financial constraints.
The meeting included a closed session to discuss specific proposals, ensuring confidentiality and strategic handling of sensitive information. Following the closed session, the board reconvened to address open session items, including committee reports and other business matters.
David Peterson facilitated these discussions, ensuring a comprehensive review of the Authority’s ongoing projects and future plans.
For Park City, this meeting was not just about understanding the BCEA’s current agenda but also about establishing its voice within the Authority. Park City’s code enforcement officer Angela Briggs, brought to light what the growing small-town’s government has done to attract business and also how the mayor’s office is hopeful that this new voice in county commerce will benefit Park City.
While Briggs had attended these meetings previously in her career as a journalist, this was her first meeting as a representative from the city.
In this capacity she shared her impressions with WCLU.
The meeting concluded with the announcement of the next BCEA board meeting, scheduled for August 9th.
Park City is poised to continue its active participation, bringing forward the unique perspectives and needs of its residents.
Park City Mayor Larry Poteet gave an impassioned statement on unity and that through comradery, not competition, Barren County will grow.
