Barren County YMCA Offers Lifeline to Homeschool Families with Free Swim Lessons and PE Classes

Jun 7, 2024 | 2:10 PM

In an unprecedented move to support the homeschooling community, the Barren County Family YMCA is now offering free swim lessons and a newly introduced physical education (PE) class specifically designed for homeschooled students.

These initiatives have received enthusiastic support, with some families traveling over an hour to participate due to the lack of similar programs in their local areas. Lindy Pedigo, Operations Manager for the YMCA, gave a brief history on the thought process behind offering the classes, as well as her personal stake in the programming.

The free swim lessons aim to equip homeschooled children with vital water safety skills and boost their confidence in the water. These lessons cater to students of all ages and abilities, with certified instructors providing tailored guidance to ensure each child receives the attention they need to progress.

Aquatics Director for the YMCA, Ashley Palmer, explained how attached her and her staff become with their students.

Complementing the swim lessons, the YMCA’s new PE class offers a well-rounded physical education experience. This program includes team sports, individual fitness activities, and cooperative games, promoting fitness, teamwork, and healthy habits among homeschooled students. Jason Ford, Sports Director and Instructor for the PE classes spoke on the veritable cornucopia of calisthenics offered by the program.

The initiative has struck a chord with the homeschooling community, drawing families from distant areas due to the unique offering at the YMCA, as Ford explained.

Beyond physical fitness and water safety, the YMCA aims to provide a safe space where homeschooled children can develop essential social skills and build confidence.

WCLU was lucky enough to talk to two students who have been going to the classes.

The programs are designed with flexibility in mind, accommodating the diverse schedules of homeschooling families. The YMCA encourages interested parents to reach out for more information and to register their children for these free programs.

Through these initiatives, the Barren County Family YMCA continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the well-being of all children in the community, ensuring homeschooled students have access to critical physical education resources and social opportunities.
