“Go Trojans!” Amy Irwin named new Barren County Superintendent

In a significant leadership transition for Barren County Schools, former Barren County High School (BCHS) Principal Amy Irwin has been appointed as the new Superintendent. This appointment comes after an extensive search following the retirement announcement of former Superintendent Bo Matthews in February.
This was the statement of Barren County Board of Education Chairperson, Shelley Groce made before the central office boomed with applause at yesterday’s special called meeting.
With 20 applicants, all poised to move the district further in their own individual way, Board member Mike Miller recognized the hard decisions made along the road of selecting Matthews’ successor.
 Taking on the mantle of superintendent, Irwin addressed the crowd to not only thank the people that have entrusted her with the furtherment of the district, but reinforce her gratitude and commitment to her students, her staff, and their families.
Amy Irwin brings a wealth of experience has been principal of Barren County High School since 2019, succeeding Brad Johnson. Her successor as principal has not yet been announced.
Irwin’s extensive experience within the district includes roles as a guidance counselor, director of the Barren Academy of Virtual and Expanded Learning, college and career development coordinator, and principal of the Barren County High School Innovation Zone.
Board Chairperson Shelly Groce lauded Irwin’s dedication and extensive experience in education.
Her selection as Superintendent marks a new chapter for Barren County Schools, promising continued growth and development.
The search for a new superintendent was thorough, with the Board of Education seeking a candidate who could build on the solid foundation laid by Bo Matthews. Matthews, who served with distinction, was praised for his leadership and vision, and the board was keen to find a successor who could maintain and enhance the district’s standards.
Irwin’s tenure as Principal of BCHS was marked by numerous achievements, including improved academic performance, enhanced extracurricular programs, and strong community partnerships. Her leadership style is characterized by collaboration, innovation, and a student-centered approach, all of which she plans to carry forward in her new role.
As Irwin steps into her new position, she aims to focus on several key areas, including academic achievement, student and staff well-being, and community engagement. She has expressed a commitment to listening to the needs and concerns of all students and staff alike.
The Barren County community is looking forward to Irwin’s leadership and the positive impact she is expected to have on the district’s schools.
