Barren County senior guard Abigail Varney signs letter of intent to play collegiate basketball at Georgetown College

GLASGOW – On Friday, joined by members of her family, teammates, and friends, senior guard Abigail Varney signed her letter of intent to continue her athletic and academic career at Georgetown College.

Varney led the Trojanettes in scoring her senior season, averaging 17.8 points per game while shooting 49.7% from field goal range. Abby ended her Barren County career scoring 1,641 points, while gathering 609 rebounds and going 45.2% from field goal range as a Trojanette.

“I’m super excited and have been waiting for this every since I was a little girl,” said Varney. ” To play with a team as good as Georgetown is a super great opportunity and I’m excited for it.” Listen to WCLU’s full interview with Abby below:

During Varney’s playing career at Barren County, she has been named to the 2021 4th Region All-Tournament team, the 2022 15th District All-Season team, the 2023 15th District All-Seasonal and All-Tournament teams, the 2023 4th Region All-Tournament and 1st Team All-Season teams, the 2024 15th District All-Tournament and All-Academic teams, the 2024 4th Region 1st Team All-Season team, and was named the 2024 15th District MVP, was a candidate for 2024 Miss KY Basketball, and was named the 2024 KABC 4th Region Player of the Year.

The Trojanettes finished with a 23-8 overall record, tying for first place in the 15th District with with a 5-1 record, before falling in the opening round of the 15th District Tournament to Allen County-Scottsville.

Abby will join a Tigers’ team that went 25-7 overall during the 2023-24 season, averaging 81.6 points and 37.2 rebound per game. Georgetown College advanced to the second round of the NAIA Tournament after defeating Milligan, TN, 87-61. The Tigers would fall in the second round to Loyola University of New Orleans, 79-74. Georgetown University is led by head coach Jeff Nickel, who has 15 years of coaching experience.
