Barren River Health Department Emphasizes the Importance of Carbon Monoxide Safety

Feb 1, 2024 | 2:50 PM

As temperatures drop and residents seek alternative heating solutions, the Barren River District Health Department emphasizes the importance of carbon monoxide (CO) safety. CO is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly, and awareness is key to preventing CO poisoning, especially during the colder months.

Our area has experienced cases of carbon monoxide poisoning when people turn to various heating sources, particularly in cold weather. To ensure the safety of our community, the Barren River District Health Department
offers the following tips:

1. Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Place CO detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas. Test
them regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
2. Proper Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation of heating appliances, such as furnaces, fireplaces, and wood-burning
stoves. Keep chimneys clear and well-maintained.
3. Regular Appliance Maintenance: Schedule regular maintenance for heating systems, water heaters, and any other
gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances.
4. Never Use Generators Indoors: Generators, grills, and other gasoline or charcoal-burning devices should never be
used indoors, even in garages. Keep them outdoors, away from windows, and at least 20 feet from the house.
5. Avoid Running Vehicles in Closed Spaces: Never run a vehicle inside a garage, even if the garage door is open.
Carbon monoxide can build up quickly in enclosed spaces.
6. Be Cautious with Space Heaters: Use space heaters with caution. Keep them at least three feet away from
flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
7. Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning: Symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting,
chest pain, and confusion. If you suspect CO poisoning, leave the area immediately and seek medical attention.

By following these tips, residents can reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and ensure a safe and healthy
environment for all. Contact your local health department to see if you qualify for a free carbon monoxide detector.
