GLASGOW – The community is invited to join a World War II veteran as he celebrates his 100th birthday on Wednesday.

Edwin F. Smith is a third-generation military hero and was a graduate of Glasgow High School before joining the Army Air Force in December 1941. He achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Smith excelled at flying aircraft and providing support missions.  His contributions were of major significance; however, an accident during a routine training mission redefined him as “one of only two living survivors.”

He was the co-pilot, leading 10 men on the practice run in a B-29 Superfortress Bomber.  After the first segment was successfully completed, they turned to begin the second run and collided with another B-29 Superfortress Bomber.  The collision killed 18 servicemen in an inferno that stretched for miles over Weatherford, Texas.

“The Tragedy over Weatherford, Texas” was officially designated with historic markers on October 18, 2003, 58 years after the crash.

The public is invited to attend the 100th Birthday Celebration for Edwin Smith on Wednesday, April 12 beginning at 1 p.m. The event will take place at Hometown Manor Assisted Living Home located at 102 Trista Lane, in Glasgow.

Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Byrd issued a Proclamation proclaiming it Edwin F. Smith Day throughout Barren County.  “We are truly honored to share this day with him and have an opportunity to thank him for his service to our country,”  said Byrd.

According to a press release, Retired U.S. Navy, Lieutenant Commander Robert Overturf from Warren County will emcee the event which will feature presentations from Congressman Brett Guthrie and others. The Barren County High School JROTC will present colors.
