GWC receives AWOP award for 16th consecutive year

Aug 3, 2022 | 10:26 AM

GLASGOW — The Glasgow Water Company’s treatment plant operations at Barren River Lake announced this week that they received a state award for the sixteenth consecutive year.

The Area-Wide Optimization Program award, also known as the AWOP award, is presented each year by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. The program establishes water quality standards exceeding minimum federal and state requirements. Optimized filtration plant performance is used for turbidity and microbial removal.

“This award reflects the commitment by our staff to continually be the best and produce the best quality water within our industry,” said Joe Watson, GWC general manager. “Without the dedication and hard work of our certified treatment plant operators, lab analysts, microbiologists, and certified distribution operators, these accomplishments would not be possible.

The GWC is the tenth largest water producer in the state, according to a news release. Five facilities are serviced by the company’s water. Their service area encompasses 444 square miles and 903 miles of water mains. About 20,000 customers are served, they said, and 3.1 billion galls of water are treated each year.
