Shane Stuart Wheat, 35, of Barren County, was recently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky. His prison term will be followed by 10 years of supervised release.

The offense involved trafficking in more than 159.08 grams of methamphetamine, prosecutors said. There is no parole in the federal system.

Wheat had five previous drug trafficking convictions, according to the announcement. Three of those convictions subjected him to increased penalties, and his criminal history qualified him as a “career offender” under federal sentencing guidelines.

U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner, FBI Louisville Field Office Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson and Barren River Drug Task Force Director Ron Lafferty announced the sentence.

“The Barren River Drug Task Force appreciates the combined efforts by working with the FBI to help fight the drug problem in Barren County,” Lafferty stated.

The FBI Bowling Green Resident Agency and the Barren River Drug Task Force investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Yurchisin II, of the U.S. Attorney’s Bowling Green Branch Office, prosecuted it.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office identified the prosecution as part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative established by Executive Order 14159, titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion.” The announcement describes the initiative as an interagency law enforcement partnership.
