Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4 has shifted planned repair closures on the U.S. 31W bridge in Munfordville from October-December to March-May. Single-lane closures are now estimated to begin in late March, with full weekend closures beginning in mid-April, according to the cabinet’s advisory.
Traffic will use one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals for most of the project. Completing the repairs will also require up to four full weekend closures, the cabinet said.
The cabinet cited material availability, schedules extending into restricted holiday weekends and the potential for peak winter weather in late December and January as reasons for rescheduling the work.
The project includes steel repairs underneath the bridge deck, expansion joint seal replacements and minor concrete work on the upper side of the deck. Each part addresses a different aspect of the bridge’s condition, according to the advisory.
The steel repairs are intended to restore the structure’s weight rating to full capacity. Replacement expansion joint seals will better protect components beneath the deck from moisture, while the concrete work will provide a smoother transition between spans, the cabinet said.
Local officials, emergency management representatives and state transportation officials met a few weeks before the advisory to prepare for the weekend closures.
