Barren County Family YMCA to reopen Oct. 8 with limited access

Glasgow News 1

The Barren County Family YMCA in Glasgow says it will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, with limited access as cleanup and restoration continue after last week’s cardio room fire.

Several spaces will remain temporarily closed: the cardio room, sauna, big gymnasium, small gymnasium and maze area, meeting room, regular Child Watch area and administrative offices.

Those areas need additional specialized cleaning because of smoke, soot and fire residue, according to the YMCA’s recovery update. Some spaces also sustained water damage from the sprinkler system and firefighting response.

The restoration team is cleaning surfaces, equipment, heating and cooling system areas, and other affected materials. The YMCA says the restricted spaces will stay closed until that work is complete and they are ready for safe use.

All land and aquatic fitness classes will resume their normal schedules. Childcare and afterschool care will operate normally, and senior meals will continue as scheduled, the YMCA said.

While the regular Child Watch space remains closed, temporary service will be offered in the childcare wing during normal Child Watch hours. It will be limited to fully potty-trained children ages 3 and older.

The YMCA said the childcare classrooms are not designed or equipped to safely accommodate younger children during Child Watch. Children under 3 cannot receive that temporary service; the restriction is separate from regular childcare and afterschool care.

Members are asked not to enter closed or restricted areas so restoration crews can work safely and efficiently.
