Barren County has received additional funding documentation for road work and low-water ford replacement, with officials announcing the funding amounts during the Sept. 14 Fiscal Court Transportation Committee meeting.
Susan Gibson reported that the 80/20 bridge fund for drainage structure replacement on Peden Cemetery Road in District 3 totals $31,120, with approximately $7,700 to be covered by the county.
She also announced a Pool Grant amount for resurfacing on three county roads in District 3.
According to the agreement, the grant provides $97,600 in reimbursement funds for Caveland Road, Harry King Road, and Horton Rigdon Road, covering a total of 2.32 miles.
The two road fund agreements are expected to be addressed during the fiscal court meeting Sept. 15 between the county and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Rural and Municipal Aid.
Fuel Tanks
Road Supervisor Jamie Degroft told committee members that the county’s fuel tanks have not been “changed out.”
“Here we are, mid-September, we bid my fuel first of July and my fuel tanks have not been changed out the way the bid was for the double wall tanks,” Degroft said, asking for suggestions on how to address the delay.
According to bid documents, Thomas Oil & Fuel currently provides the county’s road department with one 560-gallon skid tank with electric pump, one 1,120-gallon double-wall skid tank with electric pump, and installed an additional 2,000-gallon double-wall, fire-guard tank with electric pump for on-road diesel.
Committee member Derek Pedigo said he plans to review the contract and contact the company for inquiry.

Mowing
Degroft reported that the county is halfway through the third mowing cycle.
Committee member Ronnie Stinson voiced concerns over the fast-growing Johnson grass, which has presented challenges for both the state and county.
“In two weeks, it was already four foot tall and grew back over,” Stinson said.
Degroft noted the excessive moisture as a contributing factor for the fast growth.
Officials discussed potential ways to address the issue and consider changes before the spring mowing cycle begins.
