On Friday it will be 25 years since planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
It was a day that changed the trajectory of U.S. history and, since 2012, the Freedom Warriors veterans organization has hosted a memorial service at the Glasgow Fire Department off South Broadway Street.
A memorial garden that features a section of steel from one of the twin towers is mounted there on top of two gleaming pieces of metal that symbolize the towers. The memorial was unveiled on Sept. 11, 2012, at 203 S. Broadway St. in honor of the first responders who entered the towers to help those in need prior to the collapse.
“The attacks caused the deaths of 441 first responders, the greatest loss of emergency responders on a single day in American history,” according to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
This Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, there will be a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m.
The program usually includes remarks from guests, patriotic songs and other recognition honoring those who lost their lives 25 years ago.
