Friends of Barren River Lake are gearing up for a busy weekend with a poker run and live music at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.
Organizers say the poker run will take place this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., giving people a chance to enjoy the lake while supporting a local volunteer group.
Participants can join the poker run either by land or by boat.
Those driving in are asked to turn toward the beach area at Barren River Lake State Resort Park and park nearby, while boaters can pull up to the shoreline.
In both cases, registration and the first card pickup will happen at a large white tent set up near the water.
Friends of Barren River Lake spokesperson Shannon Hunt said that pre-registration is strongly encouraged to make check-in smoother.
Pre-registration is available through the Friends of Barren River Lake website until midnight, July 28, and organizers say signing up early saves participants five dollars per hand and cuts down time spent in line on event day.
The poker run itself runs from 12 to 4 p.m., but the festivities will continue into the evening with live music under the same white tent.
According to Hunt, the Jude Kingery Band is scheduled to perform from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by The Dad Bods, a popular local band, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Friends of Barren River Lake say community support for events like the poker run and concerts helps fund activities at the lake.
They noted that turnout at past events, including a recently held fireworks show, shows strong community interest in keeping these traditions going.
Organizers are encouraging residents and visitors to pre-register if they plan to attend and to watch for the big white tent near the beach area when they arrive at the park.
