Park City’s restaurant scene has welcomed a new addition that the owners and city officials agree was much-needed, or perhaps, kneaded.

In an effort to not overextend themselves, the family-owned Slice and Scoop held a “soft” opening last Friday. Owned by the Bowling Green-based Atkins family, the restaurant’s main draw is its pizza and ice cream, though the menu also includes hot dogs, chicken wings and nachos.

“We made this a family thing,” said Brenda Atkins. “It just kind of came about.”

Daughter Alaina Atkins said she has always aspired toward entrepreneurship and brings restaurant and culinary experience to the new venture.

“I just didn’t know how to get started, so this was definitely a big opportunity,” she said.

Alaina said the freedom afforded to her in the new environment is something she had found lacking in previous employment.

“Pizza and ice cream is the main idea,” she said. “That’s the ‘Slice and Scoop’ – that’s the point of it.”

Going through the menu, Alaina highlighted the traditional pizza staples as well as some more unique options.

“I love pineapple on pizza,” she laughed. “Not everybody will agree…but I love it.”

After some ribbing from her coworkers for her Hawaiian hankerings, Alaina noted that even if a topping does not appear on the menu, the restaurant will make it if they have the ingredients available.

The building now occupied by the Slice and Scoop, which formerly served as city hall, will still retain its original purpose of serving the city as Alaina explained, “We’re trying to make it about the city and make sure that everybody here has exactly what they want.”

No official ribbon-cutting date has been set yet, but Park City Mayor Donna Scavo, with tourism director Linda Watts both are eager to set a date.
