The Caverna Board of Education’s Thursday meeting focused largely on transparency, student support and district leadership, with board members approving a new administrative position and later giving Superintendent Amanda Abell a positive annual evaluation following closed session.

During the Superintendent’s Report, board members received an update on a new public accountability dashboard expected to launch on the district’s website soon. The dashboard will allow community members to view key performance metrics including overall attendance and teacher retention among other data points reflecting the district’s health. This data will be updated quarterly, according to Abell.

“It’s a great way to be transparent,” she said.

The board also approved reclassifying Central Office Manager Beth Hawke’s position to Student Support and Safety Coordinator. Abell said the move formally recognizes duties Hawke was already performing and comes with no change in salary.

Following nearly an hour in closed session, the board reconvened to complete Abell’s annual performance evaluation under Kentucky’s Superintendent Professional Growth and Effectiveness System.

Chairwoman Jennifer Briggs read the evaluation into the record, noting that Abell received an overall rating of accomplished.

Briggs said the board rated Abell exemplary in strategic leadership, instructional leadership and influential leadership. She received accomplished ratings in cultural leadership, human resource leadership, managerial leadership and collaborative leadership.

According to the evaluation, the board highlighted Abell’s work in long-term strategic planning, instructional improvement, school safety initiatives, staff recruitment and retention, financial oversight and community partnerships.

This evaluation marks the second consecutive year Abell has received an overall rating of accomplished.

The next regular scheduled meeting of the board is set for July 9.
