A new ambulance station in the Haywood community is in the works.

At its recent meeting, the Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Management Service board members approved Collins Custom Homes to begin construction of the new station on the land near the Haywood Fire Department building, at the corner of Matthews Mill Road and U.S. 31-E south of Glasgow. Collins Custom Homes was the lowest of the three submitted construction bids, totaling $579,275.

Barren County Emergency Management Director Garland Gilliam said the new station, which will join the two stations currently in Barren County, will decrease response times while also locating the emergency-response vehicles in a good place.

A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place in May with November eyed for completion, according to Gilliam.

The project will be funded through a loan from Edmonton State Bank.
