It took nearly 10 years for Glasgow to beat Barren County in softball, but it happened Tuesday in a critical 15th District contest, 2-0.
Kerrigan Hagan pitched the distance, allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Critically, she walked none and Glasgow committed no errors on defense.
“We’ve preached good pitching, good defense and timely hits, and we followed that to a ’T’ today,” Lady Scotties coach Steven Murphy said. “Kerrigan did a nice job keeping them off stride, got a couple of timely hits and we didn’t make any errors today.”
“I think it boils down to how well [Hagan] pitched,” Trojanettes coach Daryl Murphy said. “I think she had seven or eight strike outs. We never could get anything going, really. We hit a couple of balls hard that they made plays on. Really, the ball that Adley Cunningham hit down the third base line was the only solid hit that we had.”
Shea Bogue had a solid game in the circle for Barren, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Jakylie Green gave Glasgow the only run it would need with a solo shot over the center right fence in the bottom of the third inning.
Kayla Kirkpatrick added the insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Reece England drove her in with a double. Kirkpatrick had reached base on a throwing error to lead off the Glasgow half of the inning.
The Lady Scotties threatened to score in the bottom of the first inning when Hagan and Kirkpatrick each hit singles before Green was hit by a pitch. That loaded the bases. Bogue got out of that jam by forcing two pop outs and a ground out.
The Trojanettes’ best chance to score a run came when Cunningham led off the top of the third with a double. Hagan struck out two of the next three batters to turn away that threat.
“Sometimes pitching is better than hitting,” Daryl Murphy said.
“It just shows what we are capable of doing when we put it all together,” Steven Murphy said.
Green, Hagan, Kirkpatrick, England and Kinley Stephens each had a hit for Glasgow.
Cunningham, Lily Elmore and Josey Moore each had a hit for Barren.
The Lady Scotties improved to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in district play. The Trojanettes fell to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in district.
