Senior citizens in the area will have to wait a bit longer for an addition to the Barren County Family YMCA designed for them.
Originally slated for completion on April 10, construction of the new senior wing was slowed by weeks of ice and snow halted progress, delaying steel and other key material deliveries, according to YMCA Chief Executive Officer Tara Bailey.
The project is now expected to be completed in mid-May, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony tentatively planned for early June.
Bailey also shared updated renderings from DECO Architects, the firm behind the project’s design. The space will total 3,000 square feet, though some features — including a ramp to the stage and additional storage areas — were removed to keep the project within budget.

First announced in 2024, the senior wing is being funded in large part through a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant presented to the YMCA by Governor Andy Beshear in June of that year. Since then, rising costs for labor and materials have prompted additional fundraising efforts, with the organization seeking community support to bridge the gap.
One notable contribution includes a $75,000 donation from an out-of-state benefactor, given in honor of a late family member, Paul Walker.
Bailey said the YMCA has been in contact with the governor’s office, as well as other state and local officials, in hopes of having them present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Bailey said she remains optimistic about the project and the impact it will have on the area’s senior population.
