Glasgow closed its 2A Sectional title with a shutout win over Warren East on Saturday at Hart County. Prior to beating the Raiders, 4-0, the Scotties opened the day with a 5-4 win over Franklin-Simpson to advance to the title game.
Against Warren East, Glasgow threatened to score in several innings before plating two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
JP Pitcock drew a walk to start things off. He moved to second when Garett Shields drew a walk. Huston Haynes came to bat next, and Pitcock and Shields each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Then Pitcock scored on another wild pitch and Shields moved to third.
Haynes drove in Shields with a bunt single.
The Scotties added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Keaton Haynes reached base on an error. He scored on a triple by Carter Hodges.
After an out, Hodges scored on a double by Thomas Glass.
Peyton Lemily pitched six innings. He allowed four hits and struck out four. Shields closed the seventh, allowed one hit and struck out one.
Glass, Hodges, Keaton Haynes and Huston Haynes each had a hit. Hodges had the triple and Glass nailed the double.
In the early game Saturday, Glasgow built a 5-1 lead, then held on for the 5-4 win over Franklin-Simpson.
The Scotties entered the bottom of the second inning down 1-0. With one out, Lemily drew a walk, then Glass hit into a fielder’s choice, but beat the throw to first and was safe. Lemily moved to second on the play.
After another out in which Pitcock reached on a fielder’s choice when Lemily was thrown out going to third, Shields was hit by a pitch. That loaded the bases. Houston Haynes hit a pop up that was misplayed and that allowed Glass to score from third.
Steven Garrett followed an hit a single that drove in Pitcock and Shields. That left the Scotties ahead 3-1 after two innings.
Glasgow added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Hudson Gumm led off with a triple. Keaton Haynes followed with a bunt single. He stole second during Hodges’s at-bat.
Gumm and Keaton Haynes remained at second and third until Glass came to bat. He hit a single that scored both of them, then he was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double.
The Wildcats responded by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth, but the defense closed the door from there.
In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats loaded the bases, but a ball hit to Gumm at short stop turned into a game-ending double play.
Hodges started the game on the mound and pitched five innings. He struck out seven, allowed one hit and walked three. Garrett and Shields each pitched an inning. They combined to allow six hits, strike out two and walk two.
Five players had hits for Glasgow. Gumm led with a triple. Glass, Shields, Garrett, and Keaton Haynes each nailed singles.
The Scotties improved to 6-3 overall. They host Greenwood on Monday at 6 p.m.
