Glasgow students are preparing for the Area 5 Special Olympics games in Bowling Green next month. Six South Green students, along with athletes from Glasgow Middle School and Glasgow High School, will compete in track and field events at Bowling Green High School’s football stadium.

South Green teacher Elizabeth Myatt and school counselor Stephanie Ghee discussed the plans in a recent radio interview. They said the district’s Special Olympics athletes have been practicing during school hours throughout March, with training continuing into April. Myatt said the practices involve students from elementary, middle and high school levels, giving them a chance to train together and build friendships.

Each student chooses two events, often a softball throw and a race.
“They are so excited. And just to see them out there doing their thing and everybody cheering them on, it’s a neat experience,” Myatt said. “Even students from other districts will cheer for them too. Fist bump and it is so cool.”

Ghee added that staff from across the school are strong supporters of the Exceptional Childhood Education students, and that the Special Olympics season helps students enjoy the spring weather after being indoors through the winter.

“The teachers in the whole school are big supporters of them and love to cheer them on and see them succeed,” she said.

The Area 5 track and field games are scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at Bowling Green High School. The day begins with a parade at 8 a.m.

“It’s free. So anybody can come. Please come out. Be a cheerleader for these students,” Myatt said.
