Glasgow’s downtown rejuvenation is set to begin in a week’s time.
As previously reported by Glasgow News 1, replacement of the concrete on the inner portion of Glasgow’s square, including the steps, sidewalk and handicap ramp, is set to begin this month. Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd clarified that the start date is March 25, adding that the money for this project would not come from county taxes, but from grants, Beautify Barren County and private business contributions.
The restoration will not cover the steps connected directly to the courthouse.
In addition to the concrete replacement, Byrd said the work will also bring fresh landscaping on the inner side facing the Glasgow City Hall and upgraded electrical infrastructure. Hagan Contracting is slated to handle the landscaping for roughly $22,000, while Jewell’s Electrical is expected to manage the electrical improvements for around $25,000.
“Everything has to be done at the same time because your electrical runs along [the sidewalks and] because you don’t want to put in these brand new sidewalks and then bring in equipment to do landscaping. So it has to go hand-in-hand,” Byrd said.
As previously reported, Grey Rock will replace the concrete for $165,096.25.
The overall project is expected to be completed over six to eight weeks and will be carried out in phases, Byrd said. The phased approach is intended to limit disruptions around the square by avoiding a full shutdown of the area at any one time.
“It’s going in phases,” Byrd said. “I mean, it’s not going to be fun but when it’s done it’s going to be good. There is not a good time to do [the project]… I picked the spring because not a lot of people schedule events in the spring because you never know how the weather is going to be.”
