Josh Pittman has resigned as the Caverna boys’ basketball coach. He remains the Positive Approach to Student Success Coach for Caverna.
Pittman said when he took the basketball coaching job, he did not intend for it to be a one-season gig.
“I didn’t think it would be a one-year deal. I thought it would be at least two years,” he said Monday afternoon during a telephone interview.
He said when the job opened unexpectedly in July 2025, he and his wife were looking to move back to Kentucky. They are from Louisville, but were living in New York City at the time. He had been the head coach at Success Academy.
Since taking the Caverna job, Pittman and his wife have had their first child.
“I spent a lot of time away from the baby. I’m more focused on being a father right now,” Pittman said. “I tell people all of the time that at the end of every year I sit down with my wife and talk about what we plan to do next.”
He said he would like to get back into coaching at the college level, but that he has not ruled out coaching in high school again.
Before the Success job, Pittman had served as a college assistant for several years. His last college stop had been at Manhattan University, which was how he and his wife landed in New York.
The Colonels’ season ended a week short of their collective goal. Caverna was knocked out of the Fifth Region Tournament last week by Taylor County.
“It was a good year. We fell a few games short of where we wanted to be,” Pittman said. “I was proud of how the guys endured throughout the year. They played hard and gave me everything they had.”
The team had four returning starters from last season — Jaylin Craine, Cortavian Maxey, Tyson Martin and Kenyon Martin — and added two senior transfers — Gavin Lightning and Jaciyon Graves. The Martins are signing to play college football at Kentucky State. The other four plan to play college basketball.
Pittman said he will do whatever he needs to do to help the players find a place that is right for them.
“Coach [Rick] Pitino told us to go where you are wanted and valued,” and he said that is the advice he has given to the players. “For them, they have to find the right spot.”
Pittman added that the one season at Caverna was an overall positive experience, and that the community and administrative support was very good.
