Caverna’s run in the Boys Fifth Region Tournament was doused in the semifinals by cold shooting.
The Colonels entered the game at 24-7 overall and having not lost a game by more than seven points all season. Their inability to hit 3-pointers at Green County High School on Monday night changed that, and at the worst time.
Taylor County pulled away in the second half and beat Caverna, 52-35, to advance to the regional finals against North Hardin. The Colonels made only 2 of 21 3s in the game, or 10 percent. During the season they shot 32.6 percent from behind the arc.
Despite that, Caverna managed to stay in the game in the first half and led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals hit a barrage of 3-pointers in the second period to post an 18-7 advantage. They led 25-17 at halftime.
Taylor County led 42-30 headed into the fourth period. There the Cardinals milked the clock and the Colonels continued to struggle to score, which led to the final 17-point loss for Caverna.
The Colonels finish for the second season in the row with a loss in the regional semifinals. The loss ends the careers of nine seniors — Jaylin Craine, Tyson Martin, Kenyon Martin, Cortavian Maxey, Tyree Franklin, Karim Elmahdy, Izaya Bradley, Jaciyon Graves and Gavin Lightning.
